The GUARDEN project can inspire the new generation of citizens

In December 2024, the Nature Conservation Unit of Frederick University visited the Pancyprian Gymnasium (high school) in Nicosia, to inform the students and raise awareness on environmental and nature protection issues.

The students had the opportunity to learn about the value of the European network of protected areas Natura 2000 and the importance of its management for the protection of habitat types and species of flora and fauna. They were informed about examples of pressures that specific habitat types and flora species are experiencing in Cyprus and actions that were and/or are implemented to address these pressures.

Furthermore, the students had the chance to hear about the GUARDEN project, the use of artificial intelligence and the development of ICT tools for monitoring biodiversity in the decision-making process and their implementation in the Cyprus case study. A demonstration of applications that are available for public use on smartphones and tablets was held, such as the Pl@ntNet application for plant identification, which is free and available to users.
