The AMB's Beaches Section joins ICARIA: Advancing Climate Resilience in the Mediterranean

The Barcelona Metropolitan Area (AMB), a key partner in the GUARDEN project, is stepping up its commitment to climate resilience by participating in the Horizon Europe initiative, ICARIA. This project, co-funded by the European Commission within the European Climate Change Adaptation Mission, addresses the escalating challenges posed by climate hazards and extreme weather events.

A Mediterranean Region Under Pressure
With its 36 municipalities and over 3.2 million inhabitants, the AMB is not only a hub of economic activity but also a region highly vulnerable to climate change impacts. Coastal zones, in particular, are experiencing severe threats, including flooding and damage to critical infrastructure such as drainage networks. For instance, recent extreme rainfall in the Llobregat Delta set a record, highlighting the urgent need for robust adaptation strategies.

The AMB’s Beaches Section, already active in GUARDEN, will collaborate in ICARIA through its Resilience Assessment Framework (RAF). This work will build on adaptation measures outlined in the AMB’s Climate and Energy Plan 2030, aligning with broader regional and European goals for climate action.

ICARIA: Improving ClimAte Resilience of crItical Assets
ICARIA aims to improve our understanding of complex, compound, and cascading climate impacts by promoting a comprehensive asset-level modeling framework. This approach will enable the development of sustainable and cost-effective solutions tailored to the specific needs of vulnerable regions.

Key areas of focus for ICARIA include:
. Developing climate multi-hazard modeling tools and holistic resilience assessment frameworks.
. Creating a portfolio of adaptation solutions informed by long-term regional climate projections and socio-economic factors.
. Delivering a Decision Support System (DSS) to guide the implementation of cost-effective adaptation measures for extreme and compound climate events.

Mediterranean Case Studies and Beyond
The ICARIA project will pilot its methodologies in three case studies, including the Barcelona Metropolitan Area, the South Aegean Archipelago in Greece, and Salzburg, Austria. These diverse regions will provide critical insights into the replicability and scalability of climate adaptation strategies. The AMB’s participation in ICARIA not only underscores its role as a leader in climate resilience but also strengthens its collaboration with GUARDEN and other Horizon Europe projects. By integrating cutting-edge tools and strategies, ICARIA aims to create actionable solutions that empower regions to adapt to climate extremes while ensuring sustainability and economic viability.
