Presentation of the GUARDEN Project at the 5th Mediterranean Plant Conservation Week
Frederick University (FredU) and the Nature Conservation Unit (NCU), in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment of Cyprus, was responsible for the organization and implementation of the 5th Mediterranean Plant Conservation Week, held for the first time in Cyprus. The international conference took place from the 07th to 11th of April 2025, in Limassol and its fulfilment was highly supported by the IUCN – Mediterranean Plant Specialist Group, the GENMEDA and the Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund (CEPF).
The conference attracted 180 scientists and conservationists from 27 different countries, from Europe, Africa and Asia. The conference’s theme was ‘Building alliances for plant diversity conservation in the Mediterranean’ and it was a great opportunity to disseminate the GUARDEN’s main aim, the methodology followed by the partners, the Cyprus’ case study and the available results. The members of FredU-NCU prepared a poster about the GUARDEN project and had very interesting conversations and interactions with the other participants. Scientists from other countries showed great interest in the project’s tools and results.
Apart of the poster and the discussion, Cyprus’ partners had the opportunity to present the Pl@ntNet application, to the participants and challenged them to use it during the field trip on Troodos Mountain. The scientists were more than satisfied with the use of the application.
