From Data to Action: GUARDEN’s Innovative Tools Earn EU Recognition

The GUARDEN project has recently received notable recognition from CORDIS, the European Commission’s platform dedicated to sharing results from EU-funded research and innovation. GUARDEN is featured in two separate CORDIS publications: one as part of a broader article on the transformative role of artificial intelligence in life sciences, and the other as the central focus of a dedicated article on biodiversity protection. These features underscore GUARDEN’s relevance in shaping cutting-edge, data-driven tools for environmental decision-making.

In the article titled “How AI applications are facilitating new life science discoveries”, CORDIS presents GUARDEN as a prime example of how artificial intelligence is revolutionising scientific inquiry in the life sciences.

Artificial intelligence is reshaping the landscape of life sciences research as a whole, offering unprecedented speed and precision in data analysis. Tasks that once took months or years can now be completed in a fraction of the time, enabling faster scientific breakthroughs. From modelling disease progression to identifying promising new drugs, AI is becoming a powerful ally in research. This revolution extends beyond medicine; AI’s capacity to process complex, multi-source datasets is also enhancing decision-making in environmental and ecological domains.

The European Union has recognised the transformative potential of AI through a series of strategic initiatives and a broad portfolio of research projects. These projects, highlighted in a recent CORDIS Results Pack, show how AI is enabling smarter, more efficient responses to today’s societal challenges. From early diagnosis tools for endometriosis to environmental sensors, these innovations reflect a strong commitment to leveraging technology for the public good.

Among these initiatives, the GUARDEN project stands out for its innovative application of AI in biodiversity protection. GUARDEN is developing digital decision-support tools that integrate deep learning, satellite data, and ecosystem modelling to help policymakers better account for biodiversity in their decisions, especially in land-use. By turning complex environmental data into actionable insights, GUARDEN empowers stakeholders to make informed, ecologically responsible decisions and policies.

CORDIS also dedicated an entire article to GUARDEN, titled “Biodiversity protection through innovative decision tools”. This feature explores the project’s mission to equip environmental stakeholders with practical, AI-powered decision-support solutions. It emphasises GUARDEN’s commitment to multi-stakeholder collaboration and to ensuring that biodiversity is a central consideration in both local and EU-level policy processes.

Together, these two features by CORDIS highlight GUARDEN’s achievements in applying AI to environmental science and its growing value for decision-makers in both the public and private sectors. We sincerely thank the CORDIS editorial team for recognising and sharing our work through these two articles.
