Bringing climate change in the classroom
In January 2025, Nature Conservation Unit of Frederick University visited the Lykeio Kykkou B’ (high school) in Nicosia, for a presentation about climate change and its impact on the environment like habitats, flora and fauna species.
Students participating in the European Parliament Ambassador School Programme and the Erasmus+ Programme attended the presentation and were involved in a very interesting discussion. Teenagers from Cyprus, Greece, Serbia and Austria expressed their thoughts about how they themselves perceive climate change, how this affects the environment and in which way youth can act.
The presentation was held in English and a reference was made about the value of the European network of protected areas Natura 2000 and the importance of its management for the protection of habitat types and species of flora and fauna. They showed great interest in which way youth can be involved and act to help the work of scientists and decision makers. They were informed about the GUARDEN project, the use of artificial intelligence and the development of ICT tools to gain knowledge and learn about the environment they live in. A demonstration of applications that are available for public use on smartphones and tablets was held, such as the Pl@ntNet application for plant identification, which is free and available to users.
