BioPlatgesMet held a successful online workshop to explore new tools for beach management

On February 19, 2025, the BioPlatgesMet project, in collaboration with the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona (AMB), the Institute of Marine Sciences (ICM-CSIC), the Institut Metropoli (IM), and the Artificial Intelligence Research Institute (IIIA-CSIC), held an interactive online workshop to introduce innovative tools for urban beach management. The workshop was addressed to the technicians from the city councils of metropolitan municipalities: Castelldefels, Gavà, Viladecans, el Prat de Llobregat, Barcelona, Sant Adrià del Besòs, Badalona, and Montgat.
The workshop was part of the continued co-design process and testing of tools for citizens, focusing on the Monitoring Dashboard and the new Virtual Assistant. They are two digital solutions designed to consolidate biodiversity data and support informed decision-making. In the GUARDEN project, MINKA’s public participation tools play a key role in the Spanish case study for urban beach management.
Participants explored practical examples of how to use these tools for the management of Barcelona’s urban beaches. Additionally, the workshop highlighted opportunities to increase the participation and get more data from the urban beaches, such as BioDiverCiutat (City Nature Challenge) and the BioMARathon.
